A ranked community board.

Readers vote, rate and flag. AI proposes drafts and changes to the map. Editors decide, and can overrule the readers in public. Shipped is the open example: a demonstration site about machine-learning releases, with its code at github.com/AnthusAI/Shipped-web.

Step 1 · Turn it on

One plugin block in the site's configuration.

Reader steering is a plugin. A publication names the rating dimensions it cares about, how ranking blends editors and readers, and which subjects readers may vote on. Proposals publish only when the site says so.

{
  name: "reader-steering",
  dimensions: ["useful", "ready", "advances", "open"],
  ranking: { combination: "shrinkage", shrinkageK: 20,
             readerShareCap: 0.4, newAccountWeight: 1 / 3 },
  subjects: { types: ["item", "submission", "story", "proposal"] },
  proposals: { publish: true },
}

Shipped · papyrus.config.ts

This is Shipped's own block, in its open configuration. Reader sign-in turns on one site at a time; see reader votes and ratings.

Step 2 · Proposals

AI proposes, readers steer, editors decide.

Draft stories, new concepts, renames, merges and splits are filed as Proposals by AI. Each shows its state in words and with a mark, its evidence, and its votes. Story drafts come from Cited Trends.

Shipped · Proposals

See the queue. The page is web/pages/proposals.md and web/assets/shipped-proposals.js in the Shipped repository.

Step 3 · The editor tier

When editors overrule the readers.

Editors approve, decline, pin or hold. They can override the community result with a public reason, and both results stay visible. They can set aside votes under a fixed rule, such as accounts under 24 hours old, and the page says how many.

What a reader sees

Community: up 42. Editor: declined, with the reason and the date. The page also says how many votes were set aside and why.

The editorial process

How it stays honest.

  1. Readers sign in with Google and pick a handle. A site knows a reader only by an identifier that is different for every site.
  2. Votes advise. They rank the queue; they never publish anything.
  3. Editors decide, and a decision against the readers carries a public reason.
  4. Everything is labelled. AI-proposed says AI; editors' and readers' scores stay separate.
